Righteous Gentiles

A resource guide on the reasons why non-Jews rescued Jews during the Holocaust

By: Elaine Goldstein and Elyn Picknally

Introduction:

Anne Frank wrote in her diary, "It is amazing how much noble, unselfish work these people are doing, risking their own lives to help and save others." She of course was referring to the brave people who were helping her and her family hide from the Nazis. The number of non-Jews that risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust is unknown. However, an important issue researchers have examined is why these so-called righteous Gentiles rescued Jews. What motivated these people to risk their lives to save a people who were depicted as dirty, disease carrying, rodent-like, non-humans?
