Flesher, Andrew. "Characterizing the Acts of Righteous Gentiles." Journal
of Religion and Society. 2000 Vol. 2.
Andrew Flesher contends in this article that righteous Gentiles insisted
they needed no special praise for the acts they performed by rescuing Jews
during the Holocaust. These non-Jewish rescuers claim they were just ordinary
people fulfilling their duty. Flesher claims the reason the rescuers helped
the Jews was because they found themselves in situations where they could
help and had the ability to see that they were able to help, whereas others
did not see themselves as able to help.
Gushee, David P. "Why They Helped the Jews." Christianity Today.
Oct. 24, 1992 Vol. 38 Issue 12.
This article begins by claiming there were three groups of people who must
be considered when discussing the Holocaust, the killers, the victims, and
the bystanders. A few of these bystanders became rescuers of the Jews. Gushee
tells his readers Christians should remember the rescuers and learn from
them. He goes on to analyze the righteous Gentiles. Gushee examines who
they were and what about them led them to become righteous Gentiles. Gushee
concludes with a list of reasons the rescuers gave to answer the question
of what motivated their actions. The reasons that motivated Christians to
help save Jews include personal ties with Jews, group influence, and patriotism
and political convictions.
