Sauvage, Pierre. "Weapons of the Spirit." 90 min. 1989.
Pierre Sauvage tells the story of a sleepy mountain village in Le Chambon,
France, whose brave residents joined together and saved five thousand Jews
during the Holocaust. The inhabitants of Le Chambon were Huguenots, the first
Protestant settlers in France. The Huguenots themselves had been persecuted
for centuries. Pastor Andre Trocme urged parishioners to fight against the
Nazis by arming themselves with "Weapons of the Spirit." In this film
the residents are interviewed and give their reasons for saving the Jews.
Smalley, Katherine and Sarin, Vic. "So Many Miracles." 58 min. 1993.
This film recounts how the Banya family hid Frania and Israel Rubinek
in the Polish village of Pinczow for two and a half years starting in the
fall of 1942. Sophia Banyia claims she felt pity for the Rubineks and grew
to love Frania as if she were a sister. While concluding her story, when
asked why she took such risks, she stated, "I want to save you; I have to
save you."
